What to Wear to a Virtual Job Interview

Hypergrid Business has an interesting article that might help you decide what to wear to a virtual job interview. Hypergrid employs writers who interview business professionals, so they naturally expect those applying for a job to arrive at the interview wearing full business attire. However, the article points out that it's best to learn a bit about the culture of your prospective employer so that you can arrive wearing something that matches that culture. It is a fact, in the real world, that arriving at an interview for some tech companies wearing a suit will actually lose you the job, but I agree with Hypergrid that it's best to err on the safe side and wear a suit if you have no idea what is expected.

The article goes on to give additional advice about bringing your resume with you (obviously) and having any props or designs ready to show to your interviewer. Preparation is key, as with any job interview, real world or not. It's an interesting article and will, of course, benefit a more limited number of people right now, but I think it provides good advice for those interviewing virtually and the number of people who fall into that category will only increase in the future.

If I were interviewing someone for a job at me2oh.com, wearing a suit would not be at the top of my list (and I promise you that I will not be wearing one myself). I'm not really concerned with what someone is wearing (please wear something, though... or it would be a little weird). In fact, one of the more important things would be that your avatar appears to have had some time put into the way it looks. That does not mean that you have to look like a lot of money was spent. That's not the point. If your avatar is the virtual representation of you, your personality should be reflected in your avatar's appearance. Creating a new avatar and doing nothing to change its appearance doesn't tell me anything about you, nor does it tell me that you are really interested in working in our virtual world.
