Version 2.2 of Linden Lab's official viewer for Second Life is now available. This version of the viewer has been available for beta testing since late last month and is the first major release of the viewer using the Snowstorm process.

Linden Lab has announced that it will shut down avatarsunited.com, the social networking Web site that the company acquired in January of this year. Jack Linden made the announcement yesterday in the Second Life Features blog.

As many of you may have already heard, a new feature, called the Display Name, is coming to Second Life. Display Names, according to Linden Lab, will allow residents to change the way that their name is displayed in-world. The company claims that this will allow greater freedom for residents when choosing their names and more flexibility once their names have been chosen.

Linden Lab released the second quarter metrics for Second Life. The company reported a stable economy and higher monthly repeat logins. A total of 109 hours were logged by residents in Q2, down 7 million from the previous quarter, while economic participation (residents who receive or distribute Linden Dollars) was flat against the previous quarter, but higher than the same period last year.

As announced by Philip Linden at SLCC, Teen Second Life will be shut down by the end of this year. The official deadline is December 31, 2010 and teens aged 16 and 17 will be transferred to the main Second Life grid on or before that date.

Oh her blog today, Jessica Lyon, the lead developer on the Phoenix project, announced that the viewer has been approved by Linden Lab for inclusion in the Third-Party Viewer Directory (TPVD). She also tells readers to expect an update very soon. No new features are mentioned and it seems as though it will be a bugfix release.

The Emerald blog has a new entry claiming that its Communications Manager, Arabella Steadham, has been banned from logging into Second Life.
