Groups

Groups are an excellent way to gather with others who are interested in the same topic. Anyone can create a group and there are several options when a group is formed. Groups can be public (anyone can join) or private (members must be invited) and the group manager may customize the group to suit their needs.

Groups can exist for any topic and we encourage friends and associates to get together and form new groups.

At the present time, two types of content can be posted into a group, but the group manager can choose which, if any, each group member can post. All control rests in the group manager's hands.

  1. Group Discussion: A group discussion is like a forum topic. In fact, groups are very similar to forums. Discussions, when posted to a group, can be commented on by other group members.
  2. Group Announcement: A group announcement is intended to be used by group managers to announce things to the group. Comments cannot be posted to announcements.

Group Types

The following examples should give you an idea of how powerful our groups feature can be.

A Support Group: If you run a business or other type of organization in Second Life, you may wish to create a group where your customers can discuss your products or services and get support. In this case, you would want a public group where all members can post discussions, empowering your users to get support from within the group. This will reduce the time you spend supporting common customer issues. If course, you may also post announcements to the group in order to update your members and let them know about important events or other information.

An Announcement Group: If you run an organization, you may want a group that exists only to update your customers and let them know about new products, events, or other information. In this case, you might want to restrict the posting of discussions to the group to only a few key members or simply use group announcements to tell your members about important events.

A Private Group: Any group can be made private so that you may choose who can join. In this case, you would set your group to "Invite only" and all potential group members must receive an invite from you in order to join. As an example, this is great for management groups, where only certain members of an organization will be granted access to the group. Private groups are also great for a group of friends or business associates who are working on a project or share a similar interest. The group can be a place where members can post discussions and keep a record for later.

A Moderated Signups Group: You may not wish to create a private group but may still want to moderate who can join your group. In this case, you would set your group to "Moderated" so that you could approve all requests to join. This may be useful for cases where you have a group of resellers and you want them to apply for a membership to your group before allowing them to join.

Whichever type of group you create, the settings can modified later if you find it is necessary. Groups are flexible and easy to manage.
